Hi there,

My name is Abigael Kim

I'm a socioecologist and science communicator from Ontario, Canada. My work  investigates the relationship between oceans and people, supporting the use of resource management techniques that empower underserviced coastal communities through participation and capacity building. These projects are  often focused on coastal, island, and peripheral regions.

My work is uniquely rooted in the stories of those who most closely interact with and rely on the ocean. By developing digestible documvents and technical research, I aim to shine a light on the realities, resilience, and culture of coastal communities.

I can best be described as a marine socioecologist, meaning that I utilize a mixture of qualitative data methods to answer questions related to marine spaces and those who live, play, and work in them. As a social scientist, I bring with me my formal natural science training, facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to my work.

Though I began my career as a fluvial geomorphologist, my passion for marine affairs came from my time exploring Kinvarra, Ireland in 2019, prompting a shift in disciplines to pursue an undergraduate thesis on the Human Dimensions of Large-Scale Marine Protected Area Management.  I then completed my BSc in Environment and Resource Management at the University of Guelph in 2021, receiving the Canadian Association of Geographers Undergraduate Award for my work.

I received my Master's of Marine Management from Dalhousie University in 2023, where I was a Sobey Fund for Ocean Scholarship recipient and a Nippon Foundation Ocean Nexus Center Student Research Fellow. During this time, my work investigated the implications of blue economic development in Bocas del Toro, Panama, researching under Dr. Wilf Swartz and Dr. Cinda Scott.

I currently work as a freelance scientist and writer with the Nippon Foundation Ocean Nexus Center and am based out of Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada. I am always looking for new projects, reports, and research to support on.
