HI, I'M ABIGAEL
Scientist. Storyteller. Writer.
I’m an award-winning marine social scientist, storyteller, and writer based in Nova Scotia, Canada.
HI, I'M ABIGAEL
My work explores the realities, resilience, and culture of coastal communities at the forefront of the climate emergency.
With a BSc. in Environmental Science (University of Guelph) and a Master of Marine Management (Dalhousie University), my work has graced academic journals, government initiatives, and news publications around the world.
Known for my science communication skills and unique ability to weave together rigorous science and authentic stories, I’m passionate about breaking down traditional research norms and carving out a space in science and policy for local voices to drive global change.
I specialize in socioecological research, science communication, and project management, often working in Canada and the Caribbean on topics of sustainable development, climate change, and environmental justice in underserved communities.
WHY STORYTELLING?
I wrote my first story Philly, Billy, & Bob in the back of my mother's van at six. I’ve since been refining my craft.
Having worked with a variety of under-represented communities, I’ve come to discover the power of sharing stories with one another. The trade of histories, experiences, and even jokes can instantly connect individuals and provide insights into the way we live and the things we value.
In research, utilizing anecdotal evidence offers unique contextual clues and can help us to draw parallels between experiences, while sharing our research through stories paints a richer picture of the cases we investigate and increases the visibility of underrepresented voices.

I take great pride in sharing stories through transparent, meaningful, and creative work that is accessible beyond just the ocean-community and am on a mission to carve out space for the realities, resilience and culture of coastal communities in marine science, policy, and education.
